There are two large wards on each floor of the boys dormitory. The walls are green and gray, tall, and dungeonlike even though they are a story above ground. The rusty metal frames of beds are stacked against the walls; there must a hundred, at least. The doors between the wards are bathrooms and closets, almost every one open to our wandering steps. Donstairs, there is a room, just around the corner from the front door, furnished with fake wood paneling; the doors are strangely heavy, and closed. Inside, the air is heavy, and old. Could this be the matrons office?
