... and as we arrive at the top level of Higgins, the noises start up again: movement from downstairs,
and a knocking sound from outside. Our flashlights go quickly out, and we stand motionless,
silent except for our quickening breath and the buzz of a lone housefly in the pitch dark;
and then, all at once, the entire building seems to shift, the air around us imploding, the windows suck in, and again we hear from outside
that insistent wrapping on a windowpane from somewhere.
